Man arrested after brief confrontation at Le Mars

LE MARS, Iowa (KCAU) — A man was arrested Tuesday in Le Mars after a brief confrontation with authorities, according to a news release.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office release states that around 6:40 p.m., officials received someone saying they had been assaulted by Chase Kounkel, 39, at their home in the 27000 block of 160th Street.

When officials arrived on scene, they learned that Kounkel had allegedly burglarized the victim's home earlier in the day and returned in the evening, assaulting the victim. This resulted in serious injuries, according to the release.

About 10 minutes after filing the report, officials said they were able to find Kounkel's vehicle at his home in the 100 block of 1st Avenue NW in Le Mars.

When authorities tried to make contact with Kounkel, he did not answer his door. This led officials to dispatch the Tri-County Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Negotiators managed to resolve the incident peacefully and Kounkel was arrested around 8:50 p.m.

He was initially taken to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken to the Plymouth County Jail where he was charged with willful injury causing serious injury, a class C felony, strangulation to domestic assault, third-degree burglary, third-degree possession of methamphetamine. , all class D felonies.

Kounkel is being held in the Plymouth County Jail on $25,000 bail.

The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Le Mars Police Department, Le Mars Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol and Tri-County CERT.
