Man arrested after allegedly shooting at vehicle from home, injuring minor

The Alleghany County Sheriff's Office reports that a man has been arrested for allegedly shooting a juvenile in a vehicle while he was at his home early on July 4.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Alleghany County Sheriff's Office reports a man has been arrested for allegedly shooting a juvenile in a vehicle while he was at his home early on July 4.

According to the sheriff, at 4:36 a.m. Thursday, officers received a call from a woman in the 1200 block of Staunton Street in Selma who said four men were in a car outside her home. A Clifton Forge Police Department officer arrived and found shots were reportedly fired from the home at a white Nissan Altima as it fled the scene.

The 37-year-old owner, William Chistoffer Sorrels, was detained by the officer until Alleghany County deputies arrived to take control of the scene.

During the investigation, police learned that three juveniles and an 18-year-old male were on or near the property. Sorrels allegedly left the residence and brandished a weapon. The individuals then fled.

Sorrels allegedly fired at them, hitting the vehicle multiple times and one of the minors in the right leg.

An AR.223 was reportedly found and seized at the home, the deputies said.

The sheriff's office was later notified that the injured juvenile and three others were in the Lewis Gale Alleghany emergency room. The juvenile was then transported to Roanoke Carilion Hospital via medevac for treatment. They are now in stable condition.

Sorrels was charged with the following:

  • Malicious injury
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a crime
  • Shooting at an occupied vehicle

The sheriff's office reports that Commonwealth's Attorney Ann Garder has been contacted and the investigation remains ongoing.
