SALISBURY — A man was arrested after deputies say he climbed a tree to escape arrest after trying to break into a home Sunday.

The incident began around 4:30 a.m. at a home on Peach Orchard Lane, when the couple at the home heard a loud bang outside and went to check, Deputy Chief Jason said Owen, spokesman for the Rowan County Sheriff's Office. . While looking outside, the couple noticed a man walking around their property.

The man then allegedly broke into the screened terrace before starting to knock loudly on the door of the building. Residents then called 911, after which the man left the patio before climbing a tree to try to escape, Owens said.

When the police arrived on the scene, they allegedly tried to negotiate with the man to come down on his own before calling the firefighters to bring them a ladder. During deputies' conversations with the man, he said he didn't believe they were real, but eventually found himself on his own after several minutes, Owens said.

Police then reportedly arrested the man, identified as José Alfredo Rodriguez, 38.

Rodriguez was charged with first-degree burglary and criminal damage to real property. He was booked into the Rowan County Detention Center and given no bond, according to online jail records.
