Man and teenager die following separate road crashes in NI

A man and a teenager died in separate road accidents Friday evening and in the early hours of Saturday.

Jack Morrow, 17, from the Rathfriland area, died after a collision involving a vehicle in the Co Down town in the early hours of Saturday, while a man, aged in his 60s, died in following an accident in Poyntzpass Friday evening.

Police said a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident in Rathfriland.

A police spokesperson said that shortly before 2:30 a.m. officers were informed on Saturday that a red VW Golf had been involved in an accident.

A 19-year-old man who was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were described as serious.

“Sadly Jack, who was from the Rathfriland area, died at the scene,” they said.

“Our investigations are ongoing and we are appealing to anyone who was traveling in the area at the time of the collision, or who has dashcam or mobile phone footage, to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 149 05/25/24.

The police are also appealing for information about the accident in Poyntzpass.

Two vehicles were involved in the incident which happened on Friday evening in the village, which straddles counties Down and Armagh.

Police said a man, aged in his 60s, died at the scene, in Newry Road.

A spokesperson said: “Officers received and responded to a report of a collision involving two vehicles shortly after 6.30pm.

“Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service also attended the scene.

“Unfortunately, the driver of a gray Peugeot 207 died at the scene as a result of his injuries.

“No other serious injuries have been reported at this time.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact officers.

“Investigations are continuing to establish the circumstances of the collision, and detectives from the Collision Investigation Unit are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has phone footage cell phone or dashcam, to contact them on 101, quoting the reference number 1447 of 24/24/05,” they added.
