Man accused of stabbing another man on Farmington's River Walk – The Tri-City Record

Darren Jones, 34, charged with third-degree felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon

Darren Jones, 34, of Farmington, was arrested July 3 for reportedly stabbing a man on the River Walk in Farmington.

A Farmington man is accused of stabbing another man on the river walk near the Farmington Inn.

Darren Jones, 34, is charged with third-degree felony aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after he was identified as the person who allegedly stabbed Lowell Yazzie, 28, in the back.

Yazzie was found at 1:30 am Wednesday at a bus stop near the Farmington Inn, 510 Scott Avenue. He reportedly told Farmington police he was stabbed while walking with another man along the river walk.

Yazzie was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center and was treated for his stab wound, according to the arrest affidavit.

Yazzie told police he was with Jones on Tuesday night after meeting him at the Speedway on East Main Street and San Juan Boulevard.

The two reportedly were looking for food, when Jones began “yelling and acting up so the worker asked them to leave,” the affidavit said.

The two were walking along the river walk when Jones allegedly pulled out a folding knife from his pants and threatened to stab Yazzie. Jones then allegedly stabbed Yazzie in the back and left the area, the affidavit said.

Farmington police secured a photo of Jones from the camera at the Speedway, and that photo was sent out to police agencies in the area, as well as New Mexico State Police, according to the affidavit.

A New Mexico State Police officer spotted Jones at 9 a.m. Wednesday near the Broadway Bridge “wearing the exact same clothing as the video,” according to the affidavit.

When Farmington police arrested Jones, officers “located a (5-inch) folding knife in his pants,” according to the affidavit.

Upon questioning Jones, police stated in the affidavit that he admitted to stabbing Yazzie by saying, “what do you want to know, I stabbed him.”

Jones also reportedly told police he did it “somewhere on the river walk” and did so because Yazzie was “talking (expletive) to me,” according to the affidavit.

Jones was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.
