Man accused of stabbing 11-year-old girl planned to kill entire family, records show

KENT COUNTY, MI – A man broke into a random home with the intention of killing the entire family inside, according to court records.

However, that man, Ricardo Perez Castillo, was arrested by the owner and held at gunpoint until police arrived.

Castillo, 24, was arraigned Monday, June 17, in 63rd District Court in Grand Rapids on four criminal charges related to a random stabbing that left an 11-year-old girl injured.

The charges against Castillo include attempted murder, first-degree home invasion, assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and carrying a weapon with unlawful intent.

The incident happened around 3 a.m. on Saturday June 15. Details of the home invasion are outlined by Kent County sheriff's deputies in a probable cause affidavit obtained by MLive/The Grand Rapids Press.

Police said video surveillance showed Castillo entering the residence on Ella Terrace Court NE in Rockford where he undressed to only his underwear and T-shirt. Castillo then grabbed a knife from a kitchen drawer and went upstairs, the affidavit states.

He opened the door to the master bedroom and noticed a sleeping husband and wife. Castillo closed the door and “went to find an easier target,” the affidavit states. This led Castillo to a room where the owner's daughter and her friend were sleeping.

Castillo removed his underwear and began stabbing an 11-year-old girl while he was on top of her. The girl's screams woke the homeowner who called 911 and told dispatchers he was holding Castillo at gunpoint until police arrived. She was stabbed multiple times in the arm and shoulder, requiring surgery.

When sheriff's deputies arrived at the home, they found Castillo in a bedroom with a bloody knife next to him. Castillo told police he did not know the family or the girl he attacked. He said he planned to kill a girl and then have sex with her body, the affidavit states.

Castillo then told deputies his intention was to kill the entire family.

He was arrested at the scene and booked into the Kent County Jail.

In court Monday, Grand Rapids District Judge Sara Smolenski set cash bail at $2 million. If Castillo posts bond, he will be required to wear a GPS tether and will be ordered to have no contact with the victim or her family.

Castillo is scheduled to appear before Smolenski on July 3 for a hearing in which the judge will listen to testimony and determine whether there is enough evidence to commit the case to trial.

Castillo was also arraigned Monday afternoon on a 90-day misdemeanor charge of unlawful entry. It is alleged that he illegally entered a home – on the day of the alleged stabbing – on Oak Street in Rockford.
