Man accused of shooting captured following Trinity County manhunt

A man accused of shooting someone in Trinity County Tuesday afternoon was captured following a brief manhunt.

Shyan Spykes, 35, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting. It's not yet clear what exactly led to the violence, but Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace believes his infamous history of crime and substance abuse likely contributed to the act.

“[Spykes] is a frequent flyer of the Trinity County Sheriff's Office; we had many dealings with him,” Sheriff Wallace said in a video posted to Facebook. “Every once in a while he gets on meth and decides to do something stupid. Well, today he decided to shoot someone.

In addition to his criminal reputation in Trinity County, Spykes has a lengthy criminal record in Harris County, consisting primarily of vehicle theft and drug possession offenses.

Search and detection dogs were deployed to the Pine Crest subdivision as authorities limited their searches. Citizens were advised to be aware of the heavy law enforcement presence in the area and to confine their pets while authorities searched the area.

A little over an hour after the search was announced, Sheriff Wallace announced on Facebook that Spykes had been captured.

“Many thanks to the Wynne Unit and Director Bowers for sending a bloodhound tracking team,” his message read. “Great job and warning to potential criminals that Trinity County will bring them in.”
