The man suspected of killing a Maryland parole officer at a Chevy Chase apartment Friday night is in custody, officials said Saturday.

Montgomery County police said Emanuel Edward Sewell, 54, was found traveling on Interstate 64 near Hurricane, West Virginia. He will be extradited to Montgomery County.

U.S. Marshals Task Force agents took Sewell – a registered sex offender – into custody after a traffic stop.

He is accused of killing Davis Martinez, 33, who was found with multiple injuries in the 2800 block of Terrace Drive when he went to “conduct a resident check” in Sewell.

Sewell was charged with second-degree murder.

“This loss affects not only his family, to whom we once again express our deepest condolences, and his colleagues, but also the community he served. Law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to keep our community safe and Officer Martinez's death is a stark reminder of the dangers we face every day,” the police chief said. Marcus Jones during a press conference on Saturday.

Carolyn J. Scruggs, secretary of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Corrections, asked the public to keep Martinez's family in their prayers.

“They are unsung heroes that we often don't hear about, but are part of law enforcement. And they do a great job every day,” she said.
