A Riverside County felon who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a peace officer escaped from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday, June 16, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department announced.

The sheriff's department said Deshaun Maurice Stamps, 29, escaped from the playground, but no information was available on how he did it. The police reported him missing around 12:19 p.m.

On June 12, a Superior Court judge ordered Stamps to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after the judge expressed doubt about Stamps' mental competency to stand trial, according to court records. Criminal proceedings were stayed and Stamps was scheduled to return to court Aug. 14 for a hearing on the results of the evaluation.

On November 23, 2022, Stamps was charged with attempted murder, assault with a firearm on a peace officer, attempting to remove a peace officer's firearm, resisting his arrest and the crime of vandalism. Sentencing enhancements include Stamps being a felon.

The alleged crimes took place outside San Bernardino County, according to court records, but they did not identify the county. He has been in detention since January 30, 2023.

The Sheriff's Department identified Stamps as black, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds with green eyes. Stamps is bald and has tattoos on his neck and head. The sheriff's press release states that Stamps is a resident of Riverside.

Anyone who sees Stamps should not attempt to contact him, said the sheriff's department, which asked anyone with information on his whereabouts to call 911. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call the WeTip hotline at 800-782 -7463 or leave information on the WeTip. website at wetip.com
