Man, 27, killed in Akron street shooting identified

The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the 27-year-old man killed in a shooting at a street party in Akron Saturday night.

The man was identified as Lateris Cook of Akron.

The shooting left 24 others injured, including two in critical condition.

What happened?

Around 10 p.m., police said they went to a private residence where the birthday party was taking place. About 200 revelers were there, setting off loud fireworks, and police asked them to disperse from the street due to car traffic.

Between 10 p.m. and midnight, people returned to the party, police said, and shortly after midnight, police said they began receiving calls about shots fired.

At the scene, police said they found two handguns and several types of shell casings, including rifle casings.

The city, police and firefighters provided an update on the shooting Sunday evening.
