Man, 22, arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Petaluma crash

PETALUMA, Calif. — A 22-year-old Santa Rosa man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and other crimes following a solo-vehicle crash in Petaluma Saturday evening, it said the police.

Police received calls around 6:35 p.m. Saturday about a collision near Sonoma Mountain Parkway and Mauro Pietro Drive in which the vehicle struck the raised median, according to police.

An officer found a Honda Civic traveling northbound on Sonoma Mountain Parkway and ended up facing north in a southbound lane, police said. The car suffered front-end damage, but the driver was not injured, police said.

The driver exhibited what police described as objective signs of alcohol intoxication as well as signs and symptoms of drug use. He refused to take a field sobriety test, police said.

After further investigation, the officer concluded that the driver was operating the vehicle under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs and arrested him, according to police.

After being handcuffed, the suspect tried to flee, according to police. When the officer searched the suspect, he found a bag containing a substance he believed could be cocaine, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, obstructing/resisting a peace officer and possession of a controlled substance, according to police. He was taken to the hospital for a blood test and then booked into the Sonoma County Jail.
