Mall fire complicates brides' wedding plans

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Some heartbroken brides-to-be are still hoping to get their wedding dresses back after a fire at a Wolfchase Plaza shopping center.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to the fire on Wolf Creek Parkway Friday evening. Fire officials say no civilians or firefighters were injured, but several stores remain closed and blocked off with warning tape.

Devastated bride-to-be Stacy Enoch was supposed to pick up her dream dress from David's Bridal on Saturday, only to find the store closed and her plans in flames.

“I’ll call the company offices, I guess,” Enoch said. “I don't know. I'm trying to figure it out because I at least need the dresses to get the alterations.

A cashier at the Red Sun Buffet did not want to be filmed, but said that around 8:30 p.m., someone ran into the restaurant and told him there was a fire next door. He said he quickly asked everyone to leave the building.

Tiffany Jones and her son Mikyle Middleton also witnessed the fire.

“Chaos. It was like pure chaos, like everyone was running away,” Mikyle said.

“You walk out and they weren’t even running to their car. People ran to the parking lot believing,” Jones said.

Memphis firefighters responded quickly by deploying 52 people. The damage is estimated to be significant, with the exterior roof being the most affected.

Melanie Bakers wedding is only a month away. She drove all the way from West Helena, Arkansas, to David's Bridal, eager to pick up her dress, but received a devastating note: “Closed due to fire.”

“Well, this is the closest bride to David. There was one in Southhaven that closed, so we came here,” Baker said. “They didn't say it was of a fire, they just said it was an incident with the building.”

She managed to contact someone at David's Bridal and was able to collect her dress.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
