Mahoning Co. prosecutor to voice support for rest stop cameras to combat human trafficking

Mahoning County Prosecutor Gina DeGenova will testify before the Ohio House of Representatives in support of a bill that would add security cameras to rest areas across the state.

DeGenova will testify Wednesday in support of House Bill 473, a bill introduced by Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown).

If the bill becomes law, it would mandate the installation and maintenance of security camera systems at 85 rest areas.

According to the release, the idea for the security camera came from the Ohio Association of Justice Women's Caucus. Prosecutor DeGenova was contacted by attorney Lori Luka, a Boardman native and member of the Women's Caucus, to talk about the initiative and its potential to deter human trafficking, drug trafficking and random acts of violence .

DeGenova, Luka and attorney Susan Peterson met with Rep. McNally about the idea and the legislation was subsequently created.

“This legislation has the potential to not only prevent crime, but it will also serve as strong evidence for prosecutors charged with ensuring those who violate the law are brought to justice,” DeGenova said.

The hearing on the bill is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday.
