Madhya Pradesh HC allows teenage girl to donate part of her liver to save father's life

Indore: The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Thursday allowed a 17-year-old girl to donate part of her liver to her ailing father, suffering from a serious liver disease, so that he can carry out a transplant.

Shivnarayan Batham (42), a farmer from rural Indore, had filed a petition in the HC claiming that his daughter Preeti was ready to donate part of her liver to him and he should be allowed to undergo the transplant procedure.

During the hearing of the petition before Justice Vishal Mishra, the government lawyer had said that the medical board constituted by the state had examined the health of the minor and concluded that she could donate part of her liver to his sick father.

The court accepted Batham's plea in light of the medical board's report.

The single bench also ordered that the liver transplant should be completed at the earliest by taking all precautions.

Batham's lawyer, Nilesh Manore, said PTI that his client had been admitted to a private hospital in the city after suffering from a serious liver disease for the past six years.

Manore said his client had five daughters and her eldest, Preeti, had expressed her desire to donate part of her liver. Preeti will turn 18 on July 31.

“Batham’s father is 80 years old and his wife is diabetic. So his daughter came forward to donate part of his liver so that she could save the life of her ailing father,” Manore said.

“I’m proud of my daughter,” Batham said.
