A Macomb County man has been charged in connection with a mass shooting two years ago at a suspected drug house in Detroit that left three men dead and two women injured.

Jony Saad Alatto, 32, of Macomb Township, was arraigned Friday in Detroit's 36th District Court and remanded into custody, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Police and prosecutors said that after shooting the victims, Alatto robbed the occupants of the residence before fleeing the property.

“This has been difficult to put together, but thanks to the continued and diligent work of the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, I am able to announce the charges today. I am confident that justice will prevail and this defendant will be held accountable,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement Friday.

Alatto was charged with three counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder, five counts of armed robbery, one count of felon in possession of a firearm and of 11 firearm charges.

Investigators identified the victims as John Coffie Jr., 76, Alphonso Henry, 55, and Morriss Campbell Jr., 41, and the nonfatal shootings of a 55-year-old woman and a 33-year-old woman years, all Detroit.

According to police, the incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. in August 2022, when Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 13800 block of Saratoga Street, near Gratiot Avenue, for a shooting reported.

Officers found the five victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in what was called a “known vacant narcotics location.” Several people were heard screaming inside the home, police said at the time.

Doctors arrived and pronounced Campbell dead. The other victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Henry succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later the same day. On August 17, 2022, Coffie succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Alatto is due back in court June 7 for a probable cause conference and a preliminary examination on June 14.

According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Alatto had previous prison sentences for home invasion and assault with intent to commit great bodily harm, less than murder. He also was convicted of attempted security breach, according to MDOC records.
