LPD says man arrested in investigation into James Crossing Apartments shooting

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – Lynchburg police say a man was arrested on felony charges after a shooting at the James Crossing Apartments on June 19.

According to LPD, around 11:47 p.m. Wednesday, officers arrived to the 800 block of Greenfield Drive after receiving reports of shots fired. At the scene, a shotgun and handgun bullet casings were found throughout the parking lot.

During the investigation, officers observed a man leaving the complex in a taxi who matched the description given to officers by witnesses at the scene. The man was later identified as Mitchell Larnell Bennett Jr., 44, of Madison Heights.

The taxi was stopped by LPD officers while still on the apartment complex property. A search was conducted, during which a pistol allegedly fell from Bennett's person and a shotgun shell was found in the area where he was seated in the cabin.

Investigators currently believe Bennett Jr. was involved in an altercation that led to a shooting in the parking lot of the James Crossing Apartments.

Mitchell Larnell Bennett Jr. was arrested and charged with:

  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon
  • Three counts of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon
  • Discharging a Firearm into an Occupied Building
  • Unloading a firearm in town
  • Two counts of property damage (Felony)

Bennett Jr. is currently being held without bail at the Lynchburg Blue Ridge Regional Jail.

LPD says the investigation is still ongoing and believes other people may be involved.
