Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department sends volunteers to help search Greece for missing retired Deputy Albert Calibet

LOS ANGELES (KABC)– Volunteers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department traveled to Greece to help search for a retired deputy who went missing while hiking during an extreme heat wave.

Albert Calibet, 59, of Hermosa Beach, disappeared more than a week ago while hiking on the Greek island of Amorgos.

His girlfriend and brother flew to Greece a few days ago to also help with the search, but said the local and U.S. governments weren't offering them enough resources. Calibet's brother Oliver appeals to authorities to provide him with his cell phone data to help with the search.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told Eyewitness News his department is offering resources to help in the search.

Luna says that after Calibet retired as a deputy, he continued to work in the department's Transportation Services Office.

At least five foreign visitors visiting the Greek islands have died or gone missing in recent weeks due to a heatwave in the region. Over the weekend, an American tourist was found dead on the island of Meraki.

Calibet was a frequent visitor to the island and an experienced hiker. He was supposed to meet a friend for lunch after his hike, but he never arrived. This friend alerted the Greek authorities who launched the search.
