Longmont man arrested for sexually assaulting Boulder child

A man has been arrested by Longmont police for sexually assaulting a Boulder child.

Mitchal Phillips, 28, is charged with sexual assault of a minor – position of trust. He is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today for his deliberation hearing. He has not yet been granted bail. A photo of the person arrested was not immediately available.

According to an affidavit, at 1 a.m. on June 30, two Boulder children were having a sleepover in Longmont when Philips woke a child from her bedroom and brought her to the living room couch. Philips allegedly removed the child’s clothes and touched her, then later told her to “keep that for us.” Two hours later, Philips allegedly returned and tried to touch a child again, but the child told him no.

Later that morning, the child reported the assault and Phillips was contacted by police at his work at Longs Peak Hospital. During initial investigations, police discovered Phillips apologized for the assault via text message and admitted to being with a child at 1 a.m. and telling the child the incident should be kept secret, according to the affidavit.

Police reported that Phillips said his intention was to teach the victim what to do in a situation where she was being sexually assaulted.

According to the affidavit, Phillips is a registered sex offender with a conviction for first-degree sexual assault. Police noted that Phillips has several other open cases with similar circumstances. According to court records, there is currently one case under Mitchal Phillips' name in Colorado and it is this one.
