Long Island fatal crash: Drunk driver kills 4, injures 9 in Deer Park nail salon crash

DEER PARK (WABC) — A horrific accident on Long Island left four people dead and nine others injured.

The tragic accident happened in Deer Park when a car drove through Hawaii Nail & Spa shortly after 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Police arrested Steven Schwally, 64, for DWI.

They say Schwally was driving a 2020 Chevy Traverse at a high rate of speed in a parking lot on Commack Road.

He then crossed the Grand Boulevard and entered the main entrance of the nail salon.

“Someone saw that the man was driving and he was coming from this Kohl's parking lot and he was trying to pass someone and then they ran straight into the nail salon and you could hear people screaming and screaming,” Danielle Tanis, a witness, said.

Four people were killed instantly. Several others remain in hospital.

“It's horrible, it's going to be tough on the community…tough on the volunteer firefighters, but we're going to get through this…it's really horrible to see, especially this time of year with all the good things going on, graduations and everything,” said Deer Park Fire Department Deputy Chief Dominic Albanese.

Shortly after the accident, Albanese said people were trapped inside the salon.

Schwally was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
