Long Bend Fire on the Deschutes River prompts evacuation of two campgrounds

The Long Bend Fire burning on the west bank of the Deschutes River, about 4 miles southwest of Maupin, has prompted “a precautionary evacuation” of two popular campgrounds.

The fire, which blackened 108 acres Saturday evening and was 0% contained, prompted the evacuation of Harpham Flat and Wapinitia campgrounds.

Currently, there are no navigation closures on the river in an area that is very popular for whitewater rafting, according to Central Oregon Fire Information. “However, boaters should use caution in the area as helicopters may exit the river,” the agency said in a social media post.

Engines, rappels and aerial means overturned at the start of the day but firefighters will remain on site overnight.

“Additional resources will arrive on site tomorrow to support law enforcement operations,” COFI said.
