Long Beach shooting: Man shot dead near LIRR station, leading to partial suspension of service

LONG BEACH, Long Island (WABC) — One person was shot in Long Beach after thousands of young people took to the beach during what police say was a “senior jump day.”

The victim was shot near the LIRR station. He was expected to survive and two people were being questioned Friday morning.

The shooting occurred after nearly 3,000 people — mostly high school students who ditched classes in Nassau County and Queens — converged on the city's boardwalk around 6 p.m. Thursday.

Long Beach police have witnessed fights and inappropriate behavior, including climbing on aid stations and police cars, and have called on Nassau County police to recruit more officers.

After clearing the beach around 7 p.m., the crowd dispersed into the streets and the victim was shot dead shortly after.

LIRR then temporarily suspended service between Long Beach and Island Park. It has since been restored.
