ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A local teen's hard work and dedication paid off Saturday, with a free event held to raise awareness about scoliosis in the community.

Olarose Ndubiusi, who was recently featured in our youth segment “Generation Roc”, hosted the event, highlighting the effects of scoliosis on children when diagnosed.

The “Finding Scoliosis with Kindness” educational symposium featured a panel of medical experts, workshops, and poetry and art presentations.

The creative expression component is something near and dear to the hearts of young advocates.

“Seeing that there are so many more people who want to know about scoliosis or who have scoliosis and want to know more, who want to learn how to accept their scoliosis and deal with it in a positive way. I think it's a wonderful thing, and I think doing events like this, raising awareness about scoliosis, also raises awareness about invisible struggles in general. We all face invisible struggles and it is very important to be able to find positive ways to communicate how we feel, express ourselves and turn our pain into something positive,” said Ndubuisi.

Mikhaela Singleton, anchor of Sunrise on News 8 and host of “Generation Roc,” was the emcee for the “Fisk” event. Rochester Mayor Malik Evans also gave opening remarks.
