BROOKHAVEN — A Lincoln County man who was arrested and faces capital murder and kidnapping charges after a woman and child were found dead, and another child was found alive last week could be linked to a major missing persons case. Additionally, a Lincoln County grand jury failed to indict him for sexual battery in February 2023.

Daniel Callihan, 36, was captured in Jackson on Boozier Drive after a chase, according to Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade last Thursday.

Callihan's sister, Dixie Hemphill, of Bogue Chitto, alleged in an article posted on Unfiltered with Kiran, a news site, that Callihan told her he was involved in the disappearance of Jonathan Estes, a missing man from Bug Chitto. Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Hemphill reported the information to them and they took her to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

MBI is the lead investigator in the Jonathan Estes case and investigated the allegations. On Tuesday, MBI released a statement on Callihan's alleged involvement.

“The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has reviewed statements and reports submitted by Daniel Callihan's sister regarding her connection to a missing person in 2018. This is an open investigation and MBI is still seeking evidence corroborating the Callihan's involvement. Anyone with information can submit it to [email protected].

Rushing said Callihan was bouncing all over the place, making him hard to find. He was arrested in December 2022 for sexual assault. He was booked into the Lincoln County Jail as a homeless person. A warrant has been issued for his arrest for sexual violence in June 2022.

“He was then arrested in Jackson. He was staying there,” Rushing said. “He was presented to the grand jury and the grand jury didn't charge him, meaning there wasn't enough to indict him. The case was thoroughly investigated and we even had his sister testify before a grand jury. We have done our part in this regard.

Update on deadly kidnappings

WLBT reports Callihan allegedly killed Callie Brunett in Louisiana, the woman died from multiple stab wounds, according to the Tangipahoa Parish coroner. Victoria Cox was arrested as an accomplice and charged with capital murder and sexual assault, according to Hinds County jail records. WDSU New Orleans reported that Callihan was booked into the Rankin County Jail on capital murder and sexual battery charges.

He has since been booked into the Madison County Jail on a charge classified by the U.S. Marshall's Office as conspiracy.

According to court documents, a federal public defender has been appointed to Callihan's case. His federal charge in Mississippi involves felony kidnapping. A detention and preliminary hearing will be held June 25 at 2:30 p.m. in the Southern District Court of Mississippi. Callihan is also listed in the Eastern District of Louisiana court system, but court records in Louisiana are sealed.
