Liverpool teenager will be the last person to receive his Eagle Scout from Troop 620 | First World War

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The final chapter ends for the Eagle Scouts of Troop 620, as they celebrate their latest accomplishment on Saturday, June 1.

After nearly a decade, 18-year-old Cole Broughton is hanging up his Boy Scout uniform for good.

“I would be a different person if I wasn’t in the Boy Scouts,” said Liverpool resident Cole Broughton.

A big part of Cole's life, thanks to his older brother Kyle, who received his Eagle two days before heading to West Point.

“I used to go to their meetings, their Boy Scout meetings and I loved it, and I also had friends who were in Boy Scouts, so I thought it would be pretty cool to being with my friends and having fun,” Broughton said.

Inspired by his brother and friends, Broughton decided to join us at the age of 10. Quickly following in Kyle's footsteps.

“I think it helped Cole a lot to have an older brother who was successful in the Boy Scouts, and what I mean by success is that he made it to Eagle,” said Clark Broughton, father of Cole.

A lifetime achievement, with only 4% of scouts earning this rank and even fewer for children of color.

“It's probably maybe one percent, or maybe even less than that. So we raised two Eagle Scouts, we are extremely proud of them, as well as our three boys,” Clark Broughton said.

“It’s really important to me. I really know that not many black people receive Eagle Scout and I just want to represent myself well,” Broughton said.

On Saturday, June 1, Cole and his fellow Eagle Scouts from Troop 620 will celebrate their latest accomplishment at Persimmons at Timber Banks in Baldwinsville.

Troop 620 disbanded in January 2024. It has been a part of the Liverpool community since the 1970s. Cole will now be the last Eagle Scout in the troop.
