Live updates between Israel and Gaza: Rough waters near JLOTS force 4 US ships to run aground

Four US military ships that were part of the JLOTS temporary dock mission bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza broke away from their moorings on Saturday due to rough seas and ended up running aground near the Gaza dock and near Ashkelon, Israel, US Central Command said.

“Efforts to recover the vessels are underway with the assistance of the Israeli Navy,” the central command said in a statement.

No injuries have been reported and no U.S. personnel will enter Gaza during recovery efforts, according to central command.

President Joe Biden secured a commitment from Egypt during a discussion Friday with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to resume U.N. aid deliveries to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing, according to a report of their call by the White House.

Biden also expressed support for reopening the Rafah crossing with “arrangements acceptable to both Egypt and Israel and agreed to send a high-level team to Cairo next week for further discussions.”

“The two leaders agreed to deliver quantities of humanitarian aid and fuel to the United Nations at the Kerem Shalom crossing. This is temporary until a legal mechanism is found to reopen the Rafah crossing on the Palestinian side” , declared the Egyptian presidency.

Aid delivery through the Rafah crossing was halted after Israel intensified its military offensive in southern Gaza and took control of the crossing from the Palestinian side on May 7.

The leaders also discussed “new initiatives” to reach an agreement guaranteeing the release of hostages held by Hamas and a ceasefire in Gaza. No details were provided.

“President Biden and President Al-Sisi affirmed their commitment to working together to create the conditions for lasting and viable peace in the Middle East region,” the White House said. “They agreed to remain in regular contact, directly and through their national security teams.”

The Spanish consulate in Jerusalem will not be allowed to provide services to Palestinians in Judea and Samaria, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Friday.

“Following Spain's recognition of a Palestinian state and the Spanish Deputy Prime Minister's anti-Semitic call not to simply recognize a Palestinian state “and to liberate Palestine from the river to the sea”, I “I have decided to sever the link between the Spanish diplomatic mission in Israel and the Palestinians and prohibit the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem from providing services to Palestinians in Judea and Samaria,” Katz said in a statement.

The International Court of Justice ruled that Israel must immediately cease its military operations in Rafah, citing an “immediate risk to the Palestinian people.”

The vote was 16-2, with Israel one of the votes against the decision. The other country to vote against the decision was Uganda.

The U.N. court has no way of enforcing its ruling and Israel has said it will defy any order to stop the fighting.
