Little girl dies one day after mother killed by suspected street racer while crossing road

An Ohio mother and her 21-month-old daughter died after being run over by a teenager who was racing with another car in Florida.

Jessica Raubenolt, 24, was pushing her daughter Lillia in a stroller across the street on Wednesday when a Ford Mustang crashed into them, police said.

The mother and daughter were rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where Jessica was pronounced dead. Lillia was placed on life support, but she died Thursday evening.

The driver of the 2018 Mustang was Cameron Herrin, 18, Tampa police said in a news release Wednesday.

Herrin's older brother, Tristan, 20, was a passenger in the vehicle. A gold Nissan driven by a 17-year-old was seen running alongside them, according to the department.

“Witnesses stated that sometimes the cars were side by side, and at other times they were changing places and changing lanes,” police said.

Raubenolt was crossing legally at the intersection, police said Tampa Bay Times.

Raunbenolt, who lived in Ohio, was in Tampa visiting her uncle while her husband, David Raubenolt, was waiting to get certified as a single-engine plane pilot, according to the newspaper.

They were staying with his uncle, John Reisinger, who spoke to Times before Lillia's death about the three men involved and expressed words of forgiveness.

“We are praying for these young boys and their families,” Reisinger said. “We hope that something good comes from this senseless accident.” That's what Jessie would want.

The two drivers, Herrin and the 17-year-old, were charged with street racing, vehicular homicide and reckless driving resulting in serious bodily injury, police said in the release. On Thursday, following news of Lillia's death, Tampa police tweeted that the charges against them “will be enhanced” as her death is taken into account.

Both were released on bail after posting $10,000 each, according to the Times.

Herrin's brother, Tristan, the passenger, faces one count of misdemeanor racing. He was released from jail the same day as the incident after posting $500.

No attorney is listed for any of them, according to the Associated Press.
