List of new weapons sent by Spain to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez signed a bilateral security agreement in Madrid on Monday.

The deal allocates 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) in military aid to Ukraine in 2024, as part of the country's fight against Russia's full-scale invasion, launched there is more than two years old.

Reuters reported that the agreement provides for the supply of modern military equipment for land, air, naval and other uses. In addition, it emphasizes the protection of Ukraine's food export routes.

The 10-year deal also calls for Spain to send Ukraine 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) by 2027.

“It is more important than ever to redouble our support,” Sánchez said at a news conference.

Russia is slowly advancing on the front lines in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions of eastern Ukraine. Zelensky said on Sunday that Moscow also appeared to be preparing for a new offensive in the Kharkiv region, which has seen an increase in the number of attacks by Russian troops in recent weeks.

“Whoever does all this does not want peace,” Zelensky said in a video speech on Sunday.

Reuters reported last week that Russian President Vladimir Putin was seeking to “freeze” fighting along the current front lines, according to four Russian sources familiar with the matter. A senior Kremlin official told the outlet that Putin was also “ready for a ceasefire” in the fighting.

Peace negotiations have been repeatedly presented by both warring sides, although Ukraine and Russia have not yet agreed on a set of standards for a pause in fighting.

Meanwhile, the Russian military began nuclear weapons exercises on Tuesday in response to “provocative statements and threats by some Western officials towards the Russian Federation,” according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
