'Lethal Weapon 5' is still relevant, says Mel Gibson

Since then, little progress has been made on the film. But today, Mel Gibson sheds new light on Lethal Weapon 5. Speaking on the Inspire me podcast, Gibson shared that the film was still in the works and that he was still ready to direct it.

“I am going to direct the fifth film of the Deadly weapon series,” Gibson said. “Richard Donner, who directed the other four, has sadly passed away and he was a good friend. He kind of tasked me with carrying the flag home on that one, so it will be an honor for me to do that.

Gibson then revealed that Donner had “gone a long way” with the film's script, and that his team had kept it mostly intact while completing the script: “We used what was there and kept digging into it.” and working on it. I'm pretty happy with it. It's good, I had a lot of fun doing it.

He added: “It’s funny, but it’s also quite serious. It addresses some difficult issues. I can not wait to be there.”

The original Deadly weapon was released in 1987 and spawned three sequels, the last of which was released in 1998. The franchise follows the escapades of Detective Martin Riggs (Gibson) and his partner, Detective Roger Murtaugh (Glover).
