Lawrence man sentenced for aggravated assault in 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Douglas County Prosecutor Suzanne Valdez announced today that a Lawrence man was sentenced to 21 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections for his involvement in a 2023 aggravated battery charge.

Court documents state that Maj. C. Edwards Jr., 45, of Lawrence, entered the bedroom of a 19-year-old woman while she was naked and pinned her to the floor. Another woman was in the apartment at the time of the break-in and was able to intervene and alert authorities.

At the time of the incident, Edwards was on parole for a 2006 voluntary manslaughter conviction in Douglas County.

“The defendant chose to commit another violent and heinous act,” District Attorney Valdez said.

“I am committed to protecting our community and ensuring justice is served for all victims.”

Assistant District Attorney Samantha Foster represented the state of Kansas. The case was prosecuted by the Lawrence, Kansas, police department. Judge Stacey Donovan also sentenced Edwards to 12 months of post-release supervision.
