An 18-year-old girl who had just graduated from high school was shot and killed Thursday in Boston's Seaport district, Boston police said, while searching for the person who shot her.

The teen, who “had just graduated from Boston Collaborative High School,” was expected to survive, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox told reporters.

The location of the shooting, at 200 Pier 4 Boulevard around 11:43 a.m., was steps from the Institute of Contemporary Art, where witnesses said the Boston Collaborative High School graduation took place.

Police were investigating two crime scenes, Cox said. Although the investigation was still early, he said, investigators believe the shooting happened in a garage and may have followed an altercation.

The teen has not been publicly identified.

No arrests have been made, but Cox said the shooting was not believed to be a random act of violence. He and Suffolk County Prosecutor Kevin Hayden asked for the public's help in identifying the shooter and his possible accomplices.

“This is a travesty. This should not happen. High school students who attend a graduation on a beautiful day like today should not have to see that day marked by a shooting,” Hayden said, encouraging people involved “to surrender immediately”. “.

Photos taken on the ground showed an area blocked off by yellow tape outside a furniture store, with several officers on the scene.

Aerial footage from the scene showed police investigators focusing their attention on a car at the side of the street.

Boston Collaborative High School is a collaboration between Boston Public Schools and six community organizations that serve students who need a non-traditional educational setting. The school district did not immediately release a statement on the shooting.
