Latest fire restrictions in northern Arizona for summer 2024

National forests and other public lands in northern Arizona have begun implementing fire restrictions as hot and dry conditions increase.

Rules regarding things like campfires, smoking, and welding can differ from forest to forest. It is essential to check what is allowed at leisure sites before you go there.

There are three levels of fire restrictions. Level 1 restrictions generally limit campfires to developed recreational areas. Level 2 restrictions generally prohibit all fires. Stage 3 restrictions may include closing an area to public access.

Where are Level 1 restrictions in effect?

Agencies can tailor restrictions to meet specific needs. Generally, under Stage 1 restrictions:

  • Wood and charcoal fires are permitted only in developed campgrounds and picnic areas.
  • Smoking is permitted only indoors, in a vehicle or on a designated recreational area.
  • Stoves, lanterns, and appliances that operate on liquid petroleum or liquid petroleum gas may be used if they can be turned on and off and if they are used in areas where flammable materials are unobstructed within a 3-foot radius.
  • The rules for discharging a firearm, air rifle, and gas pistol may vary.

Fireworks are still prohibited.
The parts of the Tonto National Forest are subject to Stage 1 and recreational shooting restrictions. They begin at the junction with the national forest boundary and the Verde River near the northwest corner of the Mazatzal Wilderness and include the Tonto Creek area. A closure map is available on the Tonto National Forest website.

Similar restrictions were also adopted State Trust Lands in Gila, Maricopa and Pinal Counties. Welding and the use of acetylene torches and other open flame devices are also prohibited.

These are currently the only restrictions in effect in Arizona.

Stage 2 and 3 Restrictions

Level 2 fire restrictions generally prohibit all campfires. Here is what is generally prohibited:

  • Lighting, kindling, maintaining or using fire, including charcoal, briquettes, smoke pots and wood stoves.
  • Smoking outside.
  • Sandblasting, welding, or using an acetylene or other torch with an open flame.

Agencies can adjust restrictions to suit their needs, so check their website or social media for details.
Under Level 3 fire restrictions, the area is closed to the public due to extreme fire risk.

This is a developing list that was last updated on May 24, 2024. Additional information will be added as it becomes available.
