LASD deputy's brother searches for him in Greece – NBC Los Angeles

Days after a retired Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy disappeared while hiking in Greece, his brother isn't giving up hope of finding him.

Albert Calibet was last seen on June 11 hiking on the island of Amargos. His brother Oliver Calibet is in Greece with four other retired MPs, desperately searching for his brother in a remote area.

Oliver tells NBC4 he searched the brush and rocks in hopes of finding his brother. “Maybe he crawled here, I don’t know anymore,” Oliver said.

“All his life he was helping people,” Oliver said.

He thinks his brother may have been injured or hid under a bush for shade. “He could eat the plants, I mean, he’s a survivor, you know,” he said.

“I’m emotional, I’m having ups and downs,” Oliver said through tears. He tells NBC4 he remains hopeful.

Oliver said he put his business on hold to search for his brother in Greece. “No one else is looking for him except my friends and a few people,” he said. “There is still hope.”

“This guy has been putting his life on the line since he was 25,” Oliver said. “Can we give him some respect?” Some help?”

A State Department spokesperson released a statement Saturday saying:

We are aware of reports of a missing American citizen in Greece. When a U.S. citizen goes missing, we work closely with local authorities in their search efforts, and we share information with families whenever possible. The Greek Missing Persons Alert Program has issued an advisory regarding this case. The Department of State has no higher priority than the well-being and security of U.S. citizens abroad. We stand ready to provide appropriate assistance to needy U.S. citizens and their families. For confidentiality reasons, we have no further comment.

Oliver said he was frustrated by the scale of the response from the U.S. State Department and the Greek government. He thinks his brother deserves more.

For now, he and his retired MPs and friends will remain in Greece looking for his brother.

Deputy Calibet had worked with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Transit Services Bureau since April 16, 1998. He retired in 2018 and returned to serve as a part-time employee for 120 days , according to the department.
