Las Vegas police identify gunman in fatal officer-involved shooting

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Las Vegas Metro Police have released more information, including a 911 call following a shooting involving a gunman at a downtown apartment complex.

The shooting happened shortly after noon on June 20 along 9th Street near Ogden Street.

Police dispatch received multiple reports of a man armed with a long gun at an apartment complex saying he was going to kill people, police say.

Seth Samuel Wilson, 49, was later identified as a suspect by police.

A 911 call made Tuesday by police revealed that a tenant in the building saw Wilson pointing a rifle at the front door of the complex.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police have identified the suspect in the department's fifth officer-involved shooting as Seth Samuel Wilson. (LVMPD)

“I mean, I can't even believe what I'm saying right now, a guy standing right there, pointing a gun, a semi-automatic rifle at the door, basically where my head was and I think it can’t even be real He’s wearing a red Make America Great hat, bearded gentlemen,” the caller told the police dispatcher.

The caller then told the center that he quickly went to his apartment after the meeting.

Las Vegas police also released surveillance video of the encounter between the caller and Wilson before police arrived at the apartment complex.

When officers arrived, they found Wilson armed with a rifle and determined he lived on the third floor of the apartment complex.

Officers were able to contact him by phone and asked him to surrender peacefully, but moments later he told police, “I'm done with this” and hung up.

Minutes later, police said Wilson left the apartment complex holding the rifle with its muzzle pointed toward the ceiling. The officers gave Wilson several verbal commands to drop the rifle. Police said he then lowered the muzzle of his rifle toward officers in the hallway. The two officers then shot Wilson, striking him, causing him to collapse, police said.

Wilson did not fire his rifle during the incident, police also said.

After the shooting, the police then moved forward, took him into custody and called for medical assistance. Despite medical intervention, Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

The two officers involved in the shooting were identified as Officer Matthew Kravetz, 35, who has been with the department since 2015. The investigation determined that Officer Kravetz fired 8 shots. Officer Andrew Buckland, 39, who has worked for LVMPD since 2017. The investigation determined that Officer Buckland fired six shots.

Both officers are assigned to the Tourism Security Division, Downtown Command. Kravetz and Buckland were not injured in the shooting and were placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of the incident.

Had Wilson survived, he would have faced several charges listed below.

  • 2 counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a protective person
  • 1 count of assault with a deadly weapon
  • 1 count of resisting an officer with a firearm

This is the fifth officer-involved shooting and fifth fatal shooting of the year for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This time last year, Las Vegas Metro Police had two officer-involved shootings.
