Las Vegas police arrest suspected shooter in retaliation for fight over woman

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Police have arrested a man accused in an August shooting that left another man with gunshot wounds to both legs, according to documents obtained by 8 News Now.

On August 29, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers responded to a shooting that left a man with five gunshot wounds. Police learned that before the shooting, the victim was standing next to a truck, talking to a woman inside, when a man approached and shot him several times, according to documents.

The victim was shot twice in the right leg and three times in the left leg. Medical staff took him to a local hospital.

The victim told police that as she tried to get away from the suspect, he kicked her in the head before leaving the scene. The victim also told police she knew who shot her, but only knew the suspect by his nickname, according to the report.

The victim believed the suspect shot him because of a fight earlier in the year in which the suspect fought with another man over a woman. The victim believed the suspect targeted him because the victim did not help him during the fight or help him break up the fight, according to the report.

In a follow-up interview with the victim, he said he recognized the suspect's voice and told police he had known him for a long time. He also told police the suspect had previously shot him, according to the report.

Using a Facebook page belonging to a member of the suspect's family, police identified the suspect as 37-year-old Columbus Barbee.

A records check showed there was an active absconding warrant for Barbee through the United States Marshall Service. Additionally, Barbee is a convicted felon for a 2011 misdemeanor in Indiana. The offense was redacted in the documents.

Detectives showed the victim a photo lineup of suspects, including Barbee, and the victim identified Barbee as the person who shot him, according to the report.

On May 23, police arrested Barbee outside an apartment.

Barbee faces one count of attempted murder with use of a deadly weapon, five counts of battery with use of a deadly weapon, assault with use of a deadly weapon and eight counts of discharging a weapon fire when a person could be in danger.

He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center on $100,000 bail. If Barbee is released on bail, he will have to stay out of trouble, have no weapons and have no contact with the victim.

His next court appearance was scheduled for June 11.
