Largo couple arrested for child neglect after baby overdose

Adela and Kyle Allen were arrested after Pinellas County deputies found their 17-month-old child dead of an overdose last year in March.

LARGO, Fla. — Pinellas County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a Largo couple after their 17-month-old child died from an oxycodone overdose in March of last year.

After a lengthy investigation, Adela Allen, 43, and Kyle Allen, 44, were arrested after they both made inconsistent statements to deputies, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

The investigation reportedly began on March 9, 2023 when officers responded to a home in Largo following reports of the death of a child. Investigators said the child was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said in the release.

Numerous substances, including oxycodone and Xanax, were found inside the bedroom, deputies said.

The sheriff's office said that during initial interviews, Adela made inconsistent statements and Kyle told investigators he was not home at the time of the child's death.

As the investigation continued, detectives were able to determine the child's cause of death to be oxycodone intoxication, according to the release. They also allegedly discovered that neither Adela nor Kyle had a prescription for the drug.

A year later, on Friday June 7, detectives re-interviewed the couple, with Kyle admitting to selling narcotics that had been supplied to him by Adela.

Adela denied knowing there were drugs in the house, but she was reportedly arrested and charged with child neglect and several counts of drug possession. Kyle was arrested for illegal use of a two-way communications device and conspiracy, deputies said in the release.

Both were reportedly taken to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.
