Large fire spreads to building on Chicago's West Side, second in 2 days

CHICAGO (CBS) — A large fire creating enormous amounts of smoke broke out Wednesday evening at an apartment building on Chicago's West Side, the second massive fire in the city in two days.

Fire crews were spraying water from multiple angles on the building located in the 2800 block of West Grand Avenue, near the intersection with California. Large amounts of smoke were visible from the air.

The Chicago Fire Department sounded a 3-11 alarm, which automatically dispatched 12 fire trucks, four fire trucks and two tower ladders, among other equipment.

The exact cause of the fire was unclear as of 7 p.m. Around 7:45 p.m., firefighters declared the fire under control and no injuries were reported.

Wednesday's fire occurred just a day later another massive fire completely destroyed a pallet repair business in the 2000 block of West Hubbard Street, which required nearly 300 firefighters and 80 different pieces of equipment to bring under control.

Both fires come as hot, dry conditions have smothered the Chicago area with temperatures reaching the 80s and even the 90s.

This is a developing story.
