Lansing man sentenced to prison on federal gun charges

GRAND RAPIDS — A Lansing man was sent to prison for nearly five years after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Tom Allen Manuel, 48, was sentenced to 57 months in prison on that charge, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Mark Totten said Wednesday.

On December 19, 2023, Manuel was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm knowing it had an obliterated serial number. Manuel pleaded guilty to the first charge on February 6, 2024.

“Mr. Manuel has a 30-year record of violent criminal behavior,” Totten said in a statement. “He blatantly violated the law and committed crimes on multiple occasions while serving time for offenses The people of Lansing deserve to be protected from such behavior, and my office is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to help protect our communities from violent offenders.

The grand jury issued the indictment against Manuel for carrying a loaded pistol on October 27, 2023. Manuel had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for bail jumping in connection with an armed robbery charge pending in Ingham County Circuit Court.
