Lander Coleman, wanted in Matteson, Ill., attack, killed himself during standoff near 95th Street in Roseland, Chicago: sources

CHICAGO (WLS) — A quiet corner of the Roseland neighborhood became the scene of a confrontation Thursday evening between an armed man and agents from the FBI and Chicago police.

Police asked a neighbor near the 9500 block of South Vernon Avenue to evacuate with her family.

“He stood up, sat down, all with a gun to his head. He took his clothes off, all with a gun to his head,” Tanya Brewer said.

Another neighbor heard someone trying to open their door. Then the police came to escort him from the scene.

Austin Peña said he and his wife were lying on the ground when they saw armed police officers drawing and the man with a gun pointed at his head.

Nine hours after the confrontation began, neighbors heard a single gunshot.

Police sources told ABC7 the man committed suicide and officers offered to help. The man was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Sources told ABC7 the man, currently in custody, is Lander Coleman.

He was wanted for shooting his ex-girlfriend and two of her children in Matteson on Saturday, May 18. The woman had a protection order against him, alleging domestic violence.

When he was approached by police Thursday evening, he allegedly displayed a weapon, sparking a confrontation that lasted throughout the night and into Friday morning. The standoff disrupted the lives of residents in this part of Roseland, but we are grateful no one else was injured.

“It's a sad day for someone to get to this point. No matter where he was, it wasn't the right one,” Brewer said.

“It’s pretty scary to have someone who committed this type of crime so close to you and your kids, so it was a scary situation,” another neighbor said.
