Lancaster County Sheriff's Office employee shot dead in Kershaw

KERSHAW, S.C. — An arrest has been made after a Lancaster County Sheriff's Office employee was shot and killed in Kershaw Wednesday evening, WCNC Charlotte has learned.

Doug Barfield, who is employed by the sheriff's office as an attorney and public information officer, was shot outside Small's grocery store, according to the sheriff's office. The grocery store is located on North Matson Street, just west of Highway 521.

Barfield was taken to the hospital after being shot, officials said. He has since been released from hospital.

Citing his employment with the sheriff's office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting. Barfield was not working at the time of the shooting.

“It’s a scary feeling knowing that one of your own has been injured and we are extremely grateful that Doug’s injuries are not life-threatening,” Sheriff Barry Faile said in a released statement.

While WCNC Charlotte has confirmed that an arrest has been made, WCNC Charlotte is still working to confirm the identity of the person suspected of committing the shooting.
