Lake County sheriff's deputies and Mundelein police officers defused a tense situation Tuesday involving a man armed with a knife and threatening to harm his neighbors.

Lake County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Christopher Covelli said deputies were dispatched to the 26200 block of North Route 83 in unincorporated Lake County near Mundelein for the report of a man had gone to a neighbor's house, started screaming, then started stabbing the neighbor's door with a knife. at 9:55 a.m. on June 11.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, the man who was later identified as Luis Maganda-Chino, 40, retreated to his home on the same block, Covelli said.

Mundelein Police officers arrived to help resolve the situation, then provided a Spanish translator because Maganda-Chino spoke primarily Spanish, Covelli said.

Covelli said sheriff's deputies and Mundelein police officers communicated with Maganda-Chino for more than an hour, eventually convincing him to leave his home and surrender.

Maganda-Chino was arrested without further incident, Covelli said.

Sheriff's deputies seized several knives after arresting Maganda-Chino, Covelli said.

Maganda-Chino was also the subject of an active arrest warrant for violation of a protection order, Covelli said.

In addition to the arrest warrant, Maganda-Chino was charged with aggravated assault, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest, Covelli said.

Maganda-Chino was transported to the Lake County Jail, Covelli said, where he remains held pending an appearance in Lake County Magistrate Court.

“Once again, our staff demonstrated patience, time and de-escalation techniques to safely resolve a violent situation without the use of force,” said Sheriff John Idleburg. “Great job by everyone involved in this incident, from our sheriff's emergency telecommunicators to our deputies who responded. Thanks to the Mundelein Police Department for their response and assistance.
