Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office Now Offering Free Concealed Carry Classes | Advertisement

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office will now offer free concealed carry classes to residents. The first class is scheduled for June 1, 2024. This initiative is intended to encourage residents to complete training if they plan to carry a concealed firearm without a license, a new allowance for eligible individuals beginning July 4, 2024.

Act No. 6 of the 2024 Regular Session of the Louisiana State Legislature allows individuals 18 years of age and older to carry a concealed firearm in Louisiana without obtaining a license or completing training, at provided that they are not otherwise prohibited by state or federal law. This law applies only in Louisiana and does not extend to states that have already signed reciprocity agreements. To carry concealed items in these states, individuals must still obtain a Louisiana concealed carry permit.

In response to the new law, the LPSO has revised its concealed carry training course to ensure that everyone who plans to carry a concealed firearm, with or without a permit, receives comprehensive information about carrying, safe use and storage. The free course will cover essential topics such as gun safety, storage, liability and prohibited carry locations.

The first free class will be held on June 1, 2024 at the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office Shooting Range, located at 3451 Highway 182 in Raceland. The class will start at 8 a.m. Participants who wish to complete the course to obtain the state's concealed carry permit must stay until approximately 5 p.m., with a break for lunch. Those who wish to attend simply for informational purposes are free to leave at any time.

Participants must bring a handgun in good working order, 50 rounds of ammunition, protective eyewear (sunglasses or goggles are sufficient), and hearing protection (caps or earplugs).

Although the course is free, advance online registration is required due to limited class sizes. Interested people can register at LPSO.net/classes. For more information, contact Captain Kevin Johnson at (985) 449-4481 or by email at [email protected].

Sheriff Webre encourages all eligible residents to take advantage of this free training to ensure responsible and safe firearm carrying in the community.
