The following is a statement from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office regarding its participation in Operation Dry Water:

July 4th is a holiday for boaters in La Porte County. The increased public presence on the water can lead to an increase in boating incidents and even fatalities.

In response, from July 4-6, the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office will participate in the national awareness and enforcement campaign Operation Dry Water. During this time, Marine Patrol officers will prioritize educating boaters on safe practices, including the importance of sober boating.

Alcohol is the leading cause of death among boaters and is a major concern. As part of Operation Dry Water, police officers will be working to increase public awareness of the dangers of impaired boating. Boaters can expect an increased presence of police officers on the water this holiday weekend.

The top priority during Operation Dry Water will be the safety of boaters, and any intoxicated boater or individual posing a danger to others will be promptly removed from the waterways.

“Drunk boating remains a pressing issue that results in preventable tragedies,” said Captain Derek J. Allen. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of boaters, paddlers and all waterway users.”

Operating a boat while impaired is illegal on all bodies of water and can result in serious injury, death, and legal consequences.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office also reminds boaters to always wear a life jacket when on or around the water.
