Kingsport man wanted in accidental shooting arrested after Weber City pursuit | WJHL

KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — A Kingsport man wanted in connection with an “accidental shooting” led authorities on a chase in Weber City Monday, according to a police report.

On June 21, Kingsport Police Department (KPD) officers responded to an “accidental shooting” in the 400 block of Barnett Drive.

When officers arrived, they found Angelique Ferguson, 43, with a gunshot wound to her left side, according to an affidavit obtained by News Channel 11. She was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

A release from the Kingsport Police Department (KPD) says Curtis Ferguson, Angelique's brother, accidentally shot her while he was removing a handgun from his pocket.

The KPD allegedly contacted Curtis Ferguson on the phone, but he refused to meet with the police.

The affidavit states that Curtis Ferguson has multiple convictions for serious crimes, is prohibited from possessing a firearm, and was convicted in 2009 of robbery and aggravated assault in the Sullivan County.

An arrest warrant was obtained for him for the following charges, according to the KPD.

  • Homicide by criminal negligence
  • Tampering with evidence
  • Possession of a handgun by a felon

On Monday, KPD allegedly saw Curtis Ferguson driving a 2017 Ford F-150 on Fairview Avenue.

He then refused to stop and led officers on a chase to Weber City, the release states.

Weber City police and Gate City police joined the pursuit.

The chase ended when Ferguson crashed after “driving recklessly in the Food City parking lot,” Weber Town police said.

Cutis Ferguson and a passenger were arrested. Two .9mm handguns were found in the vehicle, KPD said.

Curtis Ferguson was also charged with:

  • Crime Escape
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous crime
  • Criminal in possession of a firearm (two counts)
  • Driving with a revoked license
  • Failure to Obey Traffic Control Device (three counts)
  • Illegal removal of license plates
  • Speeding
  • Dangerous driving
  • Crime of reckless endangerment

As of Tuesday, Curtis Ferguson has been in custody at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail and additional charges have been filed by Weber City Police.
