Killer Mike Addresses His Grammy Arrest in New Single “Humble Me”

Shortly after winning Album of the Year at the 2024 BET Awards, Killer Mike broke his silence on his Grammy arrest with his new single “Humble Me,” which serves as his first taste of an upcoming project described as an epilogue to his latest album “Michael”.

“Humble Me” arrives the same night Mike attended the BET Awards at the Peacock Theater, near where he was arrested earlier this year. At the Grammys, which took place in February, Mike won in three major rap categories and, shortly after, was led away in handcuffs after an acceptance speech. “I won at the Grammys for spitting my grammar/I did that for Atlanta, bruh/Swept like a janitor, I got sent to the slammer bruh,” he raps on “Humble Me.” “The devil does you good when you do / The devil will ruin you, behind me Satan, I walked through the door, head held high and handcuffs with pride.”

Mike was charged with misdemeanor battery and, days after his arrest, he explained that he had an altercation with a security guard. He reflects on his time in prison on “Humble Me”: “I had to quiet my mind, I prayed and I prayed and I prayed / Liars were lying / I kept my faith / The devil put me on that whipping post / The Lord didn't lay down there with me / So I went to sleep as free as I could and the next day my son got a kidney.”

“I was in the studio the next day,” Mike said in a statement. “I’m still so inspired and just following the music at this point. All of my heroes have been handcuffed and abused in one way or another. I just thanked God in that moment that I was Daniel in the lion's den. I left the prison in the pouring rain, to my wife's house who was waiting for me, I lit a joint, I partied a little, then I woke up and heard the news about my kidney. my son.

Mike is referring to his son Pony Boy, who received a kidney transplant the day after the Grammys and appears with his father at the end of the video for “Humble Me.” “I believe that humility and worship granted me God's grace in the face of this ordeal, and I believe that my son receiving his kidney was a blessing from God,” Mike says.

At the Grammys, Mike won in all three categories he was nominated for, including Best Rap Album for “Michael,” as well as Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Scientists & Engineers.” with André 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane. . He is currently on his Down By Law international tour, supported by his choir Mighty Midnight Revival.
