Key Biscayne teen delivers more than 1,000 pairs of new shoes to rural students in Argentina | Biscayne Key

Nicolas “Nico” Besler, a passionate 17-year-old from Key Biscayne, isn’t just focused on his exploits on the field.

Since 2021, Besler has volunteered with Fundación Ruta40, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that supports rural schools in remote areas of Argentina along the iconic Ruta 40 highway.

During his volunteer work, Besler observed a significant challenge facing these students: the need for appropriate footwear. Uneven terrain and lack of shoes often prevent children from attending school regularly.

Determined to solve this problem, Besler launched a campaign to donate 1,000 new pairs of alpargatas, traditional Argentine canvas shoes perfectly suited to the region's climate and terrain.

“A few months ago I was invited to play soccer in Argentina,” says Besler, adding that he had the opportunity to visit some schools supported by Fundación Ruta40. “I realized that shoes were urgently needed.”

Nico (as he is affectionately known) has used a variety of donation sources including football academies, schools and a GoFundMe campaign which continues to accept donations. Although he has already participated in social projects, with this initiative he managed everything, from financing to purchasing, communication and logistics.

Clara Federico, executive director of Fundación Ruta40, welcomes anyone who wants to collaborate. “I'm excited about Nico's new project. It will inspire other children abroad to join our efforts. Having a teenager lead every aspect of this project is a pretty significant initiative. It demonstrates that we can accomplish remarkable things whatever your age.”

Federico invites the Key Biscayne community to visit his website, fundacionruta40.org.ar. “Our team is ready to help anyone interested in supporting children in rural schools in Argentina,” she added.

“We are grateful for the support of the Key Biscayne community since 2021. We feel very fortunate to collaborate with sponsors and volunteers overseas.”
