Kent teenager arrested for armed carjacking

A 16-year-old from Kent was found and arrested by the Kent Police Department this weekend after police say he stole a car at gunpoint.

The car, a 2019 Honda Accord, had been carjacked two days earlier in Des Moines.

On the evening of Saturday, June 22, Kent Patrol Officers received a report of a stolen vehicle in the area of ​​Southeast 258th Street. After searching a nearby apartment complex, officers found the stolen Honda driving in a parking lot with the teen at the controls.

According to Kent Police, the teenager noticed the officer's presence and appeared to be about to run away at high speed. Concerned for the safety of children playing nearby, a police officer turned his patrol car into a Honda and slammed it against a wall.

The teen was unable to get out of the car door and had to climb out of the sunroof. Police say the teen decided not to run after seeing his K9.

The teen admitted he had a gun in his pocket and the gun was found to be loaded. After additional police arrived, they safely took him into custody.

Des Moines officers helped search the Honda for fingerprints and evidence, while Kent officers placed the teen in a Seattle juvenile detention center on weapons violations and vehicle possession charges. stolen.

The Des Moines Police Department will investigate the initial carjacking and the teen could face additional criminal charges.
