Kearns man accused of shooting another man during Salt Lake gunfight

SALT LAKE CITY — A Kearns man is facing criminal charges after allegedly exchanging gunfire with another man in April in Salt Lake City.

Luis Alejandro Alfaro Munguia, 24, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and two counts of firing a firearm causing injury, second-degree felonies; as well as obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, third-degree felonies.

On April 6, Salt Lake Police responded to the area of 1050 W. 300 South after receiving a report of a shooting. Investigators found a man who had a bullet hole in the front driver's side window and who had also been shot in the left arm and right thigh, according to charging documents.

Police said the man “did not cooperate with the investigation and was transported to the hospital for his injuries.”

Detectives with the city's anti-gang unit served a search warrant at the residence where the man was found and said they recovered five firearms. While officers were still on scene, they were informed that Alfaro showed up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and forearm, according to the charges. Initially, he claimed to have been caught in the crossfire between two other parties shooting at each other.

However, detectives were later able to recover two shell casings and surveillance video from a school located at 1115 S. 300 West. The video allegedly shows Alfaro exiting one vehicle and the other man exiting a second vehicle. “A physical struggle occurs. A muzzle flash appears to go off and Alfaro Munguia runs towards (his car), then runs towards (the other man's car) and extends his arm as if he were holding a gun towards the driver (of the car) side window where the bullet hole was later discovered,” according to the charges.

As of Wednesday, no criminal charges had been filed against the other man allegedly involved in the shooting.
