KBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Ottawa County, suspect identified

OTTAWA COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) – Update: The KBI said the situation began around 8:20 a.m. when the Minneapolis pool manager heard three gunshots at Markley Grove Park.

About five minutes later, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and the Minneapolis Police Department were dispatched to the scene. While officers were investigating, more shots were fired, according to the KBI.

The KBI said Kansas Highway Patrol troopers arrived to help when the shooter, Artemis Thor Peck, 46, of Minneapolis, fled from his residence.

“Peck fired in the direction of law enforcement and the surveillance drone,” the KBI said. “Officers on scene returned fire, striking Peck several times.”

Peck was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The KBI said once completed, it would present its investigation into the shooting to the Ottawa County prosecutor for review.

The Ottawa County Prosecutor has confirmed that a police-involved shooting occurred in a Minneapolis park Saturday morning.

A man armed with a rifle began shooting in the city park around 8:30 a.m., according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Campers and pool staff were in the park when the shooting began. When officers arrived, the suspect tried to hide, according to Ottawa County Prosecutor Richard Buck.

“The Kansas Highway Patrol, the Minneapolis Police Department and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office responded and engaged the shooter,” the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said. “He was shot and transported to a Salina hospital for treatment.”

No officers or civilians were injured in the shooting, according to the KBI.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The Kansas Highway Patrol, Minneapolis Police and the Ottawa County Sheriff are also on scene and assisting in the investigation.

Ottawa County Prosecutor Richard Buck said the park, municipal pool and fairgrounds would be closed for the rest of the day Saturday.
