Kayaker rescued near Pictured Rocks

MUNISING, Mich. (WZMQ) – A kayaker who was in distress near Miners Beach was rescued in a joint effort on the morning of June 27.

According to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, United States Park Rangers received an urgent call about the kayaker at approximately 10:30 am. Rescue teams from the United States Coast Guard, Alger County Sheriff's Department, and US Park Rangers began to respond to the scene.

Prior to the arrival of the emergency responders, three commercial guide operations already in the area (Pictured Rocks Kayaking, Uncle Ducky Outdoors, and Yooper Yachts) began rescue efforts. The joint effort ultimately lead to saving the kayaker from the water, which was beginning to exhibit signs of shock.

The 40-year-old kayaker was assessed on-scene by medical responders and released.

“We are incredibly grateful for the prompt actions taken by Pictured Rocks Kayaking, Uncle Ducky Outdoors and Yooper Yachts guides and captains,” said Joseph Hughes, Chief Ranger at Pictured Rocks. “Their swift response played a critical role in ensuring this individual's safe return from the water.”

In a post on Facebook, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore said the successful rescue operations underscore the importance of working together to keep everyone safe while on the water, and that water temperatures are just now reaching 60 degrees.

They also stressed the importance of knowing limits on the water and knowing critical information before anyone goes out onto the water. To find tips about what to know, click here.
