Kansas City man accused of hitting witness during shoplifting escape

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A man is recovering after confronting a man accused of shoplifting and ending up in the hospital.

Platte County prosecutors charged Jacky O. Shariff, 23, with second-degree robbery and fourth-degree assault.

According to a court document, Shariff attempted to shoplift more than $800 worth of merchandise from a Target on North Ambassador Drive Friday afternoon.

The probable cause statement shows that several witnesses told police that a man later identified as Shariff attempted to leave Target with a cart full of unpaid items.

A loss prevention officer confronted Shariff, according to the document. Shariff then pushed the loss prevention officer against a wall before leaving the store.

Detectives said they watched video from the store. It allegedly showed Shariff loading the stolen property into a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to the probable cause statement.

The document mentioned a witness recording Shariff in the parking lot. As the witness walked away from the Jeep, Shariff allegedly intentionally pointed the Jeep at the other man. The probable cause statement alleges Shariff drove the Jeep onto the sidewalk to hit the man who was recording it.

Officers located the Jeep about 30 minutes later using a license plate reader. The description of the man with the Jeep matched that provided by witnesses. Officers arrested the man and later identified him as Shariff.

Other officers went to a Kansas City hospital to interview the injured witness.

According to the probable cause statement, the witness required 18 staples to the back of his head and 12 stitches to his right knee to treat the injuries he suffered.

The victim told investigators he approached the Jeep and kicked the rearview mirror before the Jeep struck him.

During an interview with police, the probable cause statement claims Shariff admitted he was shoplifting because he had no money. He also said he pushed the loss prevention officer because he was pushed first. Shariff then allegedly told investigators that this all happened in the heat of the moment and he hit the witness because he was in the way.
